The autobiographic and autoethnographic contributions to this collection aim to decolonise the discourse around academic mobility by highlighting experiences of precarity, resilience, care and solidarity in the academic margins.
The authors use precarity to analyse the state of affairs in the academy, from hiring practices to ‘culturally’ accepted division of labour, systematic forms of discrimination, racialisation, and gendered hierarchies, etc. Building on precarity as a critical concept for challenging social exclusion or forming political collectives, the authors move away from conventional academic styles, instead adopting autobiography and autoethnography as methods of intersectional scholarly analysis. This approach creatively challenges the divisions between the system and the individual, the mind and the soul, the objective and the subjective, as well as science, theory, and art.
This volume will be of interest not only to scholars within the field of migration studies, but also to instructors and students of sociology, postcolonial studies, gender and race studies, and critical border studies. The volume’s interdisciplinary approach also seeks to address university diversity officers, managers, key decision-makers, and other readers directly or indirectly involved in contemporary academia. The format and style of its contributions are wide-ranging (including poetry and creative prose), thus making it accessible and readable for a general audience.

By tracing how a series of accidental encounters influenced both the author’s intellectual development and career path, the chapter highlights how global inequalities in knowledge production are reproduced, and sometimes disrupted, through the most ordinary conversations.

Looking at Western-centric academia and its power structures, the hierarchies of knowledge and humanity maintained within them and the continuous devaluation and disregard of the knowledges from (de)occupied Europe’s East, the migrant experience is one of concern with what persistent East-West inequalities tell on those who enact and preserve them. Experiencing an increasingly far right German socio-political and academic environment brings back echoes of Nazi imperialism and Aryan racism that are haunting beyond a salvageable point. Refusal emerges as a profoundly powerful intergenerational response and the only way toward an intellectually and humanely meaningful and inspiring experience.

It is an act that is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. Instead, this chapter is an attempt to determine the state of denial that precedes the complaining, believing that some of the complaints generate resistance and some generate sorrow. In this chapter, I primarily think about Sara Ahmed’s work on complaining. Yet, I have some comments and observations about Sara Ahmed’s thesis on complaint. This chapter precedes the submerged phase of Sara Ahmed’s (and others’) work. Here, I want to talk about multilayer and intersectional forms of (mis)treatment, injustice, exclusion, and silencing practised by academic and research institutions and individuals within this dirty pool (I do not tend to differentiate between the two as many would like to do). Secondly, I want to reveal how such discourses and practices establish, shape, and manifest the rules of what Sara Ahmed calls the “institutional mechanics” of exclusion, marginalization, injustice, and discrimination, and how individual and collective experiences of denial and resentment are the constitutive factors in the act of complaint.

Born in Syria to refugee parents, I was denied multiple US and Canadian student visas despite securing full PhD scholarships. I pursued my education while dodging bombs in Damascus and bureaucratic nightmares in Lebanon, eventually finding refuge and completing my PhD in Brussels. There, I quickly encountered a new challenge: navigating EU research funding. Although the EU publicly embraces refugee researchers, its rigid mobility rules create clear injustices, effectively excluding us from fair access to postdoctoral opportunities.

You spend most of your years uncertain about the future (should I buy this summer dress? But what if I’m pregnant by the summer? What if I get a job in Finland?) and then, at pointed intervals, you need to muster all your energy to undergo a trial: an in vitro fertilization / an academic interview. Both require you to: 1) do nothing but prep for about two weeks, 2) to stay well-rested and healthy until the procedure is complete, 3) to really wish for it but avoid cramping up with desperation, 4) and then to wait for two excruciating uncertain weeks. The result is, more often than not, a rejection – of your body, of your mind. This essay chronicles my experiences with trying to get pregnant while struggling to get a permanent job in academia.
