At the turn of the 19th century, Stockholm's cultural life underwent a dramatic transformation. This study explores the tumultuous late Gustavian period through the life and career of actor and illustrator Axel Fredrik Cederholm. By highlighting his dual roles – as a professional actor and landscape painter with a particular focus on English landscape gardens – the study provides a deeper understanding of the artistic possibilities and choices of the time. With a combined cultural sociological, local historical, and micro-historical perspective, Axel Fredrik Cederholm is placed in the cultural and social context of his time. The study primarily relies on an extensive collection of drawings but also includes archival research to support his biography. His education, career, and parallel work as a visual artist are analysed in light of the emerging cultural institutions and their improved educational and career opportunities. Previous research on the professional history of actors has mainly focused on women and applied a gender theoretical and women's history perspective. This study confirms many of these findings but also nuances the picture by showing how men from the lower bourgeoisie saw acting not only as a means of livelihood but also as a path to social advancement. At the same time, amateurism remained an artistic ideal that gave the bourgeoisie expectations of social advancement, education, and economic stability. Cederholm’s artistry has previously been overlooked in art history. His landscape studies are examined in relation to contemporary tourism and the leisure interests of the bourgeoisie, where parks, theatre, and art exhibitions were central arenas. He both depicted and actively participated in these environments, offering new insights into the interplay between artistic and theatrical practice.en_US
