Classical studies at the University of Tartu (Estonia) have had several beginnings. As a separate academic discipline, classical philology was introduced to the university curriculum by Professor Karl Morgenstern right after the re-establishment of the university in the beginning of the 19th century. At the end of the second decade of the 20th century, the world’s first Estonian-language university was born, and with it classical studies in Estonian language, guided for years by another founding father, Pärtel Haliste. There then came a hiatus, and for decades only elementary Latin was taught at the university. However, a few classicists continued teaching students who were eager to learn more. One of those eager students was Anne Lill, on whose initiative classical philology as a separate discipline was re-established at the university in 1990. Anne Lill was the Professor of Classical Studies from 1992 to 2012, and is Emerita since 2012. This volume is dedicated to her as a token of gratitude and friendship. The volume includes papers by Jaanika Anderson, Michail Bibikov, Jerker Blomqvist, Heinz Hofmann, Maarit Kaimio, Katre Kaju, Mait Kõiv, Peter Kuhlmann, Maria-Kristiina Lotman, Neeme Näripä, Heinz-Günther Nesselrath, Kadri Novikov, Janika Päll, Vita Paparinska, Jaan Puhvel, Merike Ristikivi, Paavo Roos, Heikki Solin, Martin Steinrück, Gregor Vogt-Spira, and Stephanie West.en_US
