| oapen.abstract.otherlanguage | This book publishes for the first time the diaries kept by Danish Claus L. Clausen (1820–1892) during his travels as a missionary among the Haugians in southern Norway in 1841. The detailed descriptions in Clausen's diaries provide unique insight into the extensive religious activities of the Haugian movement in the period just before the repeal of the Conventicle Act, which had prohibited the Haugians from having their religious assemblies. The book also provides a comprehensive introduction to Claus L. Clausen himself. Following his involvement with the Haugians, Clausen emigrated to America, where he became a pastor of the first Norwegian congregation in the United States and, due to his deep and lifelong commitment to the Norwegian settlers, was subsequently deemed to have made "the most remarkable contribution to the lives of the Norwegian people in America". In Hans Nielsen Hauges Footsteps will be of interest to historians specializing in Norwegian history, the history of Christianity and of Norwegian immigration, and is relevant as a primary source for the Norwegian Haugian movement. | |
