oapen.abstract.otherlanguageThis volume examines the previously overlooked connections between historical manifestations of magic and their performance in the theater between 1600 and 1685. A comparison of Spanish and French theater culture reveals synchronous divergences in the way that magic was dealt with in various dramatic genres, shedding light on the development of magical thinking during the epistemological upheavals of the seventeenth century.
