Pablo Rojas Sahurie offers us a fascinating reading of the religious aspects contained in the political songs that emerged in Chile during the years prior to Salvador Allende's government. To do so, he refers to the Judeo-Christian concept of messianism, which he explores both in the musical structures and in the cultural conceptions that underpin the social behavior of the authors and performers of said song. Thus, the author analyzes how ideas forged in religious contexts find a prominent place in spaces related to social protest, even blurring the boundaries between the sacred and the profane. “Bring us your kingdom of justice and equality”: Messianism and New Chilean Song is a book written with a critical eye but also with passion, with a political commitment that rescues the contributions of a popular religion and that aims to make a reality that kingdom of justice and equality that Víctor Jara evoked in his songs.en_US
