Det gamle Oslo 1000-1624

oapen.abstract.otherlanguageIn 1624, fire destroyed Oslo. In its place, the new city of Christiania was established on the other side of the area now known as Bjørvika, below Akershus Fortress, and the charred remains of Oslo were razed to the ground. The area was subsequently used for agriculture, and thus old Oslo gradually disappeared from sight and mind. Not until major excavations were undertaken to build the railway system at the end of the 19th century did the remains of houses, churches and castles begin to emerge from oblivion.;;In recent years, with the construction of the Follo Line and development of the Bjørvika area, archaeological excavations have uncovered extensive traces of the medieval city and port. With contributions from archaeologists, historians, art historians and researchers specializing in building, religion, text and place names, as well as Latinists and runologists, this book is a compilation of new research and new results from these excavations. Although many aspects of the city's history will inevitably remain lost to us, our knowledge of old Oslo is now greater than ever.;I 1624 brant Oslo.
