        Abstract
This book is the result of a research project funded by the Free University of Bozen/Bolzano and entitled Classical Music in Music Education. It is aimed primarily at scholars of music pedagogy, primary school teachers, and students of courses in primary education as well as in literary and musical disciplines. It has both a theoretical and a practical character. The activities at its core were developed and implemented in the context of the research project. The volume is organised into five chapters. The first focuses on the democratic and pluralist conception of school that underlies the project. The second focuses on the concept of “classical music” and on the research project. The third offers an essential review of possible methodological tools. The fourth contains six insights into the history of art music also in a didactical perspective. The last reports the activities realized in the classrooms, also as examples for further didactical paths and experiences. Classical music is a founding aspect of the culture and society in which we live. To know it, along with other genres and types of music in a genuinely pluralistic educational framework, is everyone’s right from the earliest years of school to be able to fully exercise their citizenship. This volume is intended to be a contribution in this direction.
