Can medieval Christianization and European expansion be described as colonialism? Were those encounters shaped by racism? This volume discusses questions regarding the similarities between premodern and modern phenomena by considering the examples of Greenland and Fennoscandia, two European regions where, by the seventeenth century at the latest, Inuit and Saami had become the targets of aggressive colonization and assimilation policies.
