Abstract
This study lays out the pre-technological prehistory of contemporary virtual realities by drawing on selected discussions of virtual forces from antiquity and the Middle Ages, on meditation and spatialization procedures arising in the early modern period, and 18th-century literary approaches to the representation of space.
