dc.description.abstractRobert Townson (1762–1827) magyarországi utazására akkor került sor (1793), amikor a Felvilágosodás humán és természettudományos műveltségének összefonódása egy újhumanista szellemi korszakot teremtett. Amellett, hogy érdekelte az ország történelme, komoly megfigyeléseket tett ritka növényfajtákról, foglalkozott ásványtannal és barometriai méréseit a Magyar Királyság történetében az elsők közt tartják számon. Tokaj-Hegyalja talajtani bemutatása, a szőlők és borok leírása nem egyszerűen a nemzetközi figyelmet irányította a borvidékre, hanem a terület tudományos bemutatását célzó törekvéseket is fellendítette.
